As an academic institution with a profound and prolonged history, Ananda College holds a unique position within the country due to its glory in many fields. Without a doubt it is one of the leading boys’ schools in the island. For the main part, Ananda College is known as the pinnacle of Buddhist education on the island. The glory of Ananda College has been echoing throughout the globe since 1886 with its alumni achieving great feats of success while more than 8000 students are studying to amplify the legacy of their predecessors. Ananda College provides education to students from grade 1 to 13, with a variety of streams for Advanced Level examination. These streams include biology, physical science, commerce, arts and engineering technology. Furthermore, with a campus of 10 acres, Ananda College offers its students many co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to suit themselves for the modern world with both brains and brawn.
Late in 1913, Charles Webster Leadbeater sent a telegram offering Fritz Kunz a position as principal. Kunz had visited Ceylon during a world tour with Leadbeater in 1905-1906. Although Kunz was a young man of 25 years, he was well educated, energetic and hard-working, with a strong background of activity in the American Theosophical Society. Mr. Leadbeater knew him well, and had great confidence in his abilities.
Ananda College now offers 13 grades of education on a campus of over 20 acres. The student body is over 6000, with an academic staff of about 200. Students participate in many sports and other competitions with other schools. The team name is the Maroons.
